Saskia Post as Karin with David Tredinnick as John in the award-winning ‘In Angel Gear’ (1990).

When Richard Lowenstein’s seminal film ‘Dogs in Space’ was released in 1986, I remember attending the premiere screening in Melbourne with a lot of fellow Swinburne film school students. Three things struck me after the seeing the film (1) how many people I knew in it (2) what a maverick young and talented director Richard was (3) and the leading actress, who shone from the screen, especially in my favourite scene of her upset driving the white VW. She shone from the screen and still does.

Saskia Post and the late Michael Hutchence in Richard Lowenstein’s ‘Dogs in Space’ (1986)

I made a pact with myself that I would work with this actress one day: she had really left an enormous impression on me. Eventually, I did get to work with her on numerous occasions (1) Figures in Glass (obscure and forgettable) and (2) the most memorable of my stage shows Sam Sejavaka’s ‘In Angel Gear’ (1990) and my expectations were surpassed. I wanted a leading fearless female actress to play Karin to match the talents of the lead actor — so, luckily, down came Saskia Post from Sydney. I remember my excitement at the news. To this very day, she is still one of my favourite people/actors: beauty, dignity, curiosity, talent, kind, independence and a lot more.

A few years ago we were reunited for ‘An Afternoon With Saskia Post’ at Chapel Off Chapel where I interviewed her with an audience. The award winning production of ‘In Angel Gear’ which we both worked on is and remains one my favourite productions out of all of them — garnishing a Green Room Award for Best Production. Great memories, great lady.
